This past weekend we visited the Irvine Regional Park Railroad in Orange County. This park is huge, 491 acres to be exact, giving visitors ample space to move around and providing kids with many playgrounds to choose from.

Tell me, what kid does not like that?

Just a heads up, it can get busy so timing is everything, but before you go this is what you need to know.

Entrance Fee

There is a small fee to enter the park

  • $3 per vehicle on weekdays
  • $5 per vehicle on weekends
  • $7 per vehicle on holidays and special park events

Train Ride

If you have small children that love trains, as much as Noah and Olivia, then I know they will enjoy riding this one. It goes around central park so you get to see peacocks, the paddle boats, historical statues, and a small glance of the OC Zoo. The train conductors are also very knowledgeable and will share historical facts about the park during the train ride.

You do need tickets: $6 for anyone 2+

Bike Rentals

If you want to explore the park at your own pace then I suggest renting a bike. They have many to choose from: Double surrey, single surrey, tandem bike, and Quad Sport to name a few. Prices do vary so make sure to check the pricing before you go.

During our particular visit we opted for the single surrey, which let me tell you, was a huge workout on our part because Mark and I had to carry about 65 extra pounds! Yet the kids were the one exhausted after the ride. To this day I’m not sure how that was possible.

The single surrey was $30 an hour.

Other Activities

Irvine Regional park does have other fun activities that you may enjoy with your family. Unfortunately, we did not get to them this time around but they are:

  • Pony Rides
  • Paddle Boat Rentals
  • Orange County Zoo
  • Horse Rentals
  • Horseshoe and Volleyball Set Rentals
  • Hiking
  • Botanical Preserve

Coronavirus Precautions

Due to Covid19, business do have to take many precautions to keep everyone safe, especially if they want to stay open. From what we saw the day we went, the employees disinfect the train seats before a new group comes in. They have also added plexiglass in between each pair of seats.

This can also be said with the bike rentals. I was too slow taking out my phone when they were disinfecting the bikes, but they take the “used” bikes into this shed to disinfect and bring them back out once they are ready to be used again.

Visiting Irvine Regional park is a definite family day trip. With so many activities to do, you definitely need to plan your day ahead of time. I recommend checking the map out beforehand to help you with your itinerary. They are also dog friendly so bring your furbaby along!
